Unfolding: Vancouver was developed by students at Washington State University Vancouver in the Creative Media & Digital Culture Program (CMDC) program that included teams of creatives, designers, web developers, writers, content creators, social media specialists, and project managers. Along with the app, students created websites, designed assets, researched local history, wrote dialogue, planned marketing for social media, and performed usability testing for each version of the game.

My contributions to the project were multifaceted and are described below.

Game Design Team

As a member of the game design team, I had the pleasure of working with four of my fellow students, designing the concept, rules, abilities and overall scope of the game. Together, we produced all of the necessary documentation and concepts necessary to both kickstart the game’s production as well as guide the other student developers’ work.

Content Development Team

As part of my duties on the content development team, I designed and colored a set of animals and objects that would be used within the game. The animals appeared as non-player characters that dot the landscape, while the objects were used to represent the various resources available to the player.

Because we wanted to preserve a sketchy and watercolor look with the game, the artwork was stylized as such. The line art was created first on a tablet and then colored on the same device. It was then transferred to Adobe Photoshop on my PC where the color layer had a watercolor paper texture applied to it.
